How Credits Work

Credits meter AI use. That's it.

Your subscription includes a generous monthly allowance. Common actions cost small amounts. Larger actions like reading a whole contract cost more. Everything is visible in your Control Centre — you always know what you're using.

1 credit

A Knowledge question

Ask Clarence anything — like a legal-trained ChatGPT.

3 credits

A QC Studio chat

Question Clarence about a specific clause with full context.

~16 credits

Parse a playbook

Extract rules from your playbook document — once per version.

~40 credits

A full Contract Read

Map a contract against a playbook — positions, gaps, narrative.

1 credit / move

A Training Studio turn

Practise negotiation against a simulated opponent.

£0.03 each

Top-up credits

Packs of 1k / 2k / 5k / 10k — £30 / £60 / £150 / £300. Never expire.

Monthly allowance refreshes on your billing date. When you approach the limit, your Control Centre shows a clear usage meter. Admins can choose between manual top-up (no surprise bills) or auto-overage with a ceiling (no workflow interruption). Top-up credits never expire.

What People Actually Pay

Real scenarios. Seat price covers most of the typical usage — credits give headroom for busy months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why credits instead of unlimited AI?

Because transparency is better than a hidden fair-use policy. Credits show you exactly what every action costs, let you plan around heavy-use months, and protect you from runaway bills. Your allowance is sized for typical use — most subscribers never top up. The meter is a feature, not a constraint.

What counts as a credit?

Every AI action has a credit cost published in your Control Centre rate card. A Knowledge chat is 1 credit. A QC Studio chat is 3 credits. Running a full Contract Read against a playbook is around 40 credits. Simple actions like uploading a contract or browsing templates cost nothing.

What happens when I run out of credits?

Your admin gets a notification at 80% usage and again at 100%. They can choose between manual top-up (you buy a pack of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, or 10,000 credits — £30, £60, £150, or £300 — which never expire) or auto-overage with a monthly ceiling. Cautious firms prefer manual; growth-minded firms prefer auto. You choose per account.

Can I opt out whenever I want?

Yes. There is no contract, no minimum term, and no data held hostage. Cancel any time from your Control Centre. Your data exports with you — contracts, playbooks, audit trails, everything. We believe in earning your renewal every month, not trapping you.

Why is this so affordable compared to other legal AI platforms?

Deliberately. We believe access to professional-grade contract tools shouldn't be limited to those who can afford enterprise subscriptions running to four figures per user per month. Our goal is to grow the market, not maximise margins — a full practitioner seat is £75, all eight systems included.

Do all plans really include all eight systems?

Yes. Every plan gives you access to the full Clarence platform: Knowledge, Contracts, Create, Risk, Training, Negotiate, Governance, and Control Centre. The difference between plans is volume (contracts, seats, credits) and team features, not which systems you can see.

How does Practitioner pricing work for teams?

Clarence Practitioner is £75 per seat per month. Each seat contributes 1,500 credits to a shared company-wide credit pool — so a 5-person firm has 7,500 pooled credits every month. Only the admin sees the pool total; individual users see their own contribution. This way one heavy user doesn't blow through the whole budget while lighter users have room to spare.

Do respondents need to pay?

No. The counterparty in any negotiation participates entirely free of charge and consumes none of your credits. Only the initiating party needs a subscription. This is a deliberate design decision — we believe the barrier to principled negotiation should be as low as possible for both sides.

Can I add seats or move to Enterprise?

Yes, at any time. As your firm grows, add seats to your Practitioner subscription — each new seat adds 1,500 credits to the shared pool. If you need SSO, API access, committed-spend discounts, or unlimited seats, move up to Enterprise. Changes take effect from the next billing period, and unused top-up credits carry over.
